And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel(A) of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.(B) I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior(C) has been born to you; he is the Messiah,(D) the Lord.(E) 12 This will be a sign(F) to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,

So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.(A)

The Son Superior to Angels

For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;
    today I have become your Father”[a]?(B)

Or again,

“I will be his Father,
    and he will be my Son”[b]?(C)

And again, when God brings his firstborn(D) into the world,(E) he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.”[c](F)

In speaking of the angels he says,

“He makes his angels spirits,
    and his servants flames of fire.”[d](G)

But about the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;(H)
    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions(I)
    by anointing you with the oil(J) of joy.”[e](K)

10 He also says,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
    and the heavens are the work of your hands.(L)
11 They will perish, but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment.(M)
12 You will roll them up like a robe;
    like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,(N)
    and your years will never end.”[f](O)

13 To which of the angels did God ever say,

“Sit at my right hand(P)
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool(Q) for your feet”[g]?(R)

14 Are not all angels ministering spirits(S) sent to serve those who will inherit(T) salvation?(U)
