Luke 2:8-14

New International Version

⁸And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. ⁹An angel^(A) of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. ¹⁰But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.^(B) I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. ¹¹Today in the town of David a Savior^(C) has been born to you; he is the Messiah,^(D) the Lord.^(E) ¹²This will be a sign^(F) to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

¹³Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

¹⁴“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace^(G) to those on whom his favor rests.”

Hebrews 1:4-14

⁴So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.^(A)

The Son Superior to Angels

⁵For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;
today I have become your Father”^[a]?^(B)

Or again,

“I will be his Father,
and he will be my Son”^[b]?^(C)

⁶And again, when God brings his firstborn^(D) into the world,^(E) he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.”^[c]^(F)

⁷In speaking of the angels he says,

“He makes his angels spirits,
and his servants flames of fire.”^[d]^(G)

⁸But about the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;^(H)
    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
⁹You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions^(I)
    by anointing you with the oil^(J) of joy.”^[e]^(K)

¹⁰He also says,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
    and the heavens are the work of your hands.^(L)
¹¹They will perish, but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment.^(M)
¹²You will roll them up like a robe;
    like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,^(N)
    and your years will never end.”^[f]^(O)
